Canteen News

Lunch orders via Qkr! will now close off at 9am each morning.  This will allow our volunteers to get started straight away and give us more time to prepare the orders.

Showdown donuts will be available on Friday August 19th. More information regarding orders will be available closer to the date next term.

In term 3 we will be changing the way we deliver the ice blocks. At lunchtime only, the children who have ordered an ice block will need to bring their lunch order bag, after eating their food, back to the canteen to swap it for their ice block. No changes to recess! We have made these changes to help keep the ice blocks frozen, particularly in terms 1 and 4, until they are collected. Please remind your children of the new procedure when ordering ice blocks for them. Thank you.

Have a great weekend.

From the Library Term 2 Week 6

On Wednesday 25 May, many of our classes participated in National Simultaneous Storytime. This event is held annually with children around the world reading the same book at the same time.

This year it’s estimated that over 2 million people simultaneously read Family Tree by Josh Pyke. Some of our classes read the book, others listened to Josh read it and then sing, some listened to Australian Children’s Laureate, Gabrielle Wang, read the story, while others viewed an AUSLAN version. After reading the story, classes participated in a number of activities.

We ran a school-wide competition with students creating collages of trees, nature and family trees, with many great entries received.

Mr Greenshields had the difficult job of choosing four winners. The lucky students were: Madeleine from M2, Freya T4, Lachlan G9 and Alishba from N7.

MPS Fundraising Committee

Stem Committee

Here at Mitcham Primary School, a number of leadership opportunities are extended to our students. One of those opportunities is as part of the Year 6 STEM Committee. Students on the STEM Committee work on responsibilities such as organising technology resources, assisting with lunchtime STEM sessions, testing new equipment, and working alongside teachers as they use new technology.

During the Week 6 staff meeting, our STEM Committee members helped deliver a robotics professional learning session to staff members and showcased their own personal work to show teachers the potential of Mitcham's vast array of robotics tools. The students assisted in training teachers how to use new applications and their associated robots to complete a variety of challenges. A lot of fun and learning was had, and the teachers were very impressed with the knowledge, skills and confidence the STEM Committee demonstrated. Congratulations to Lola, Orlando, Alicia, Zoe and Harriet for all their efforts!

Sapsasa Sports

Swimming

Last term we had students in years 4 to 6 compete at Marion Outdoor Pool in our District Swimming Carnival. Well done to all swimmers and congratulations to Tyler H and Oliver M who made the district team and competed in the State Championships earlier this term.

Cricket

Last term our boys' cricket team played its first-round match against Colonel Light Gardens PS. With limited time to train before the match the boys came together and worked hard in the field and the bat to come away with the win. In their second round match in wet conditions for cricket the boys came up against Belair PS. Unfortunately, Belair came away with the win knocking our boys out of the competition. Well done boys on an amazing effort this year.

Cross Country

On Tuesday of Week 4 this term we took 26 students to Belair National Park to compete in our Sapsasa district cross country day. It is a hard course that students have to run, with 10 year olds running 2km and 11 and 12 year olds running 3km. Congratulations to all our students for competing well, especially Charlie F, Lucas A, Will H, Matilda P, Noah T, Annabelle F, Charlotte M, Hugo S, Aleks B and Claire D who managed to make our City South district team to compete at Oakbank in Week 6.

Well done to all our students who have competed in Sapsasa sports so far this year and we are looking forward to more to come with boys' soccer and 3v3 basketball coming in the next couple of weeks.

Sapsasa Netball

On Friday the 3rd of June, the Year 6 Sapsasa netball knock-out team played their first round of games. Our games were played at Westbourne Park Primary, with their gym and 2 outdoor courts providing a great setting for the day.

Fortunately, we were able to play all of our games indoors which allowed us to escape the wind and rain! Our first game was against Westbourne Park Primary, who were a very strong team. They provided our girls with a challenge and the quality of netball was exceptional; we narrowly lost by 1 goal. Our second game for the day was against Edwardstown Primary which was another competitive game, but saw us come away with the win. Our final match was against Colonel Light Gardens and this match allowed us to finish on a strong note with another win. Unfortunately, we do not move onto the next round of games, but the girls should be very proud of the netball they played.

Congratulations to all girls that were involved in the team on a successful and enjoyable day. Missing from the photo are 2 team members, Siena and Kaitlyn.

LAP-A-THON with a Splash of Colour 2022

Last term, all students participated in the Lap-a-thon with a Splash of Colour fundraiser. Students started off in their clean, white t-shirts before running through the water and colour stations completing as many laps as possible. By the end of their laps their t-shirts were no longer white, but instead covered in vibrant colours. A fun day was had by all!!!

We are putting out a last call for any donations and sponsorship forms from our Lap-a-thon with a Splash of Colour. We’d love to have all donations, big or small, via Qkr! or returned to school ASAP. Prizes for the class with the most money raised and our top 10 individual prize winners will be announced at our whole school assembly.
