Throughout Terms 1 and 2, Year 1 students have been identifying similarities and differences between family life in the past to their lives today.
On Monday 29th May, Year 1 students participated in a Toy workshop conducted by the Australian Museum of Childhood. The visit links in with our history learning, as well as our science focus on push and pull forces.
In small groups, students explored a range of toys from the past - including puzzles, push and pull along toys, colonial games and musical instruments. Through persistence and perseverance, students investigated how the toys worked and then had fun using them. They also explored what materials and joining techniques were used to make them and discussed how this has changed over time.
For the rest of the term, students will engage in the STEM design process and design their own toy and be able to explain or even demonstrate how it works.
Here are some highlights from the visit:
T2 – "The jack in the box jumped up really slowly and it scared us a little bit."
"There was a horseshoe and a ring, and you had to get the ring off."
"I liked the challenging bits - like throwing the ring on the clown."
T4 – “Some of the games were challenging.”
“The Jack in the box made us jump.”
“The woodpecker bird that wobbled down the spring was amazing.”
T7 – “Alan showed us some toys from the olden days.”
“We loved trying things that we had never seen or used before.”
“It was lots of fun.”
T8 – “There were SO many toys!”
“We loved hearing about toys from the past. The woodpecker and snake were awesome!”
I have had a lot of fun introducing our Reception students to Kimochis; a family of cuddly critters and a big bowl of emotions.
Kimochi means “feeling” in Japanese, Kimochis are toys with feelings, designed to help children feel happy, safe, confident, compassionate, and successful, help them establish and sustain strong friendships, help them get along with each other, and become resilient.
Kimochis are a proven system for helping students grow and transform by dealing skilfully with their feelings. Research documents that when instruction in building social, emotional, and behavioural skills is provided at a young age, there is a positive effect on how children problem-solve and interact with their peers later in life. Our Reception students have been learning how to recognise and manage emotions, demonstrate care and concern for others, establish positive relationships, make responsible decisions, and handle challenging situations constructively. Each week I introduced a new Kimochis character and a story, we played games to help us understand that all feelings are okay. We also learnt how the characters supported and helped each other and learnt some strategies for regulating our emotions.
In the next week or so students will be presented with Kimochis certificates which I am sure they will be proud to share with you.
Below is information on each of the characters so you can talk to your children about which Kimochis character they are most like and also which character you are like.
If you have any questions or comments about this program, please contact the school office on 8271 2227.

National Simultaneous Storytime
On Wednesday 24th May, classes participated in National Simultaneous Storytime. This is an annual event where children across the globe read the same story at the same time. This year’s book was The Speedy Sloth by Rebecca Young, and it was read by over 2 million kids around the world.
Some classes listened to Rebecca read it live from the Sydney Zoo and followed an art activity, while others watched a recording of the staff at Singapore Zoo read it to their resident sloths Indigo and Bubba. After reading the story, classes participated in a number of activities.
Collage Competition
-We ran a school-wide competition with students creating collages or drawings of animals running a race, and we received many great entries! Mr Greenshields had the tough job of choosing four winners. The lucky students were: Jacob from M3, Chloe B from G1, Frankie from G7 and Zoe from N7. Thank you to all the students who participated!
Yours in reading,

Children’s oral health is important. Unfortunately, dental decay is still a significant problem for many South Australian children. Dental decay can affect a child’s wellbeing and quality of life. It can lead to pain and many lost hours at school – however it is also a preventable disease.
All children from 0-18 are welcome to attend SA Dental and there are no out-of-pocket costs for most families. However, current data reflects only 45% of eligible children are accessing dental care and many families are unaware that SA Dental is available to them. Please see attached information.
