Volunteer

Mitcham Primary School welcomes volunteers.

Volunteers are invaluable to our school and there are many roles that you can volunteer for. Volunteering has a meaningful, positive impact on our community. But did you know that it can have many benefits for you too?

Here are some reasons to volunteer:

• can teach you a new skill

• help you to connect with your community

• employers like to see that you are a volunteer because it means that you are willing to work, have compassion, and are a team player

• You set a good example for those around you

One person can make a difference, but when that difference is multiplied, it can be life changing. Some of the main volunteering roles in our school are Canteen support, Library support, Sports Coaching, Classroom Support and Camps and Excursions.

Valid Department of Communities and Social Inclusion (DCSI) – Child Related Screening The following volunteer roles require a valid DCSI – Child Related Screening to be sighted by a Front Office staff member of the school and recorded on the volunteer register. DCSI – Child Related Screenings are valid for a period of 3 years from the date of issue. If you require a DCSI – Child Related Screening, please complete a Volunteer Application form to register your interest with the school Front Office. You will be required to attend a 2 hour volunteer session before completing the application.

A Criminal History Check is required before you start your role, and induction is conducted on commencement.

All volunteers must sign in at the Front Office on arrival, collect and wear a volunteer badge.

Becoming a Volunteer

In 2019 South Australia introduced stronger, transparent and more effective screening laws for people working or volunteering with children. The new laws mean that, from 1 July 2019, everyone working or volunteering with children must have a valid clearance, such as a new working with children check.

A working with children check (WWCC) is issued by the Department of Human Services, is valid for five years and for volunteers the screening is free. People who have a current DCSI (Department for Communities and Social Inclusion) child-related screening can keep using it until it expires. Then they will need to apply for a WWCC. If your WWCC/DCSI clearance has past the expiry date, you are not cleared to volunteer at Mitcham Primary School, you will need to update your clearance and provide the school with an updated copy. People should renew their WWCC a few months prior to the expiry date. For further information, please visit the Department for Human Services website at https://screening.sa.gov.au

How to apply for a WWCC

1: You can apply for your WWCC. Go to the website: https://screening.sa.gov.au

2: Select “Applications”; then “Application information for individuals”

3: Select “Apply for Check” when you are ready to start

4: You are responsible for completing your WWCC application, including provision of information verifying your identify

5: Complete and submit application

6: The Screening Unit will email you notification of the outcome of your WWCC application

7: Provide the school with a copy of the WWCC notification from the Screening Unit (Department of Human Services)

Responding to Abuse and Neglect Education and Care (RAN-EC)

The Department for Education requires that all ongoing Volunteers who work with children (under 18 years) are mandated notifiers. They must understand notification and reporting child abuse requirements. We ask that volunteers complete the RAN-EC course. Volunteer Induction session: https://www.education.sa.gov.au/working-us/responding-abuse-and-neglect-training/ran-ec-training-courses/volunteers-online-course-responding-abuse-and-neglect-education-and-care
